White-tailed Deer

Although common to the point that they have often become “pests”, away from the highways and backyards where most people see them, deer are amazing creatures with complex mating rituals. Since they lack their historic predators that used to keep them in check, it is a necessity for humans to monitor and control their populations to prevent overpopulation that causes the more frequent spread of disease and ultimately starvation.

In this video, a herd was seen stopping in Deer Creek, located in northern Harford County, Maryland to take a drink. You will see several bucks in the herd which is common during the early fall. Soon after the males will battle over females. The strongest male, often the one with the largest antlers, will be the one to pass its genes onto the next generation, ensuring only the best traits are perpetuated. Bucks shed their antlers each year.
