SUMMARY:Opt Outside - Black Friday Sunset Hike and Campfire
DESCRIPTION:Join us in following REI’s movement to #Optoutside this Black Friday to show that on a day where so many are crowding into stores to shop\, we can enjoy the tranquility of nature together! We will gather at the site of our wildlife center (not yet open to the public) just before sunset to hike a loop around the property\, see our recent renovations and then settle in around the campfire to warm up\, enjoy some hot cocoa and smores while listening for owl calls and awaiting the beautiful array of stars to join us above. We will discuss the future plans for the wildlife center\, give a lesson on native wildlife\, and we might even have a few extra surprises for you. \nWhile we want you to #OptOutside on Black Friday we strongly encourage everyone going out on Small Business Saturday to support our local economy! \n** Donations to help us with our work and ensure the wildlife center vision becomes a reality is welcomed and encouraged! We are a 501c3 non-profit organization that exists because of the generosity of our community!

SUMMARY:Flood Clean-Up Day at the Wildlife Center
DESCRIPTION:Many of you have kindly offered assistance and we have taken time to assess the damages and create a plan for the work ahead\, starting with this volunteer day where we can use your help! We are dubbing this event our “Rock & Roll Clean-Up Day” because we will be quite literally rolling rocks that have been moved from our creek to where we don’t want them along with removing broken fence posts\, debris\, and trash that has been deposited by the terrible flooding we recently experienced. We plan to have a dumpster onsite for the cleanup. \nWe ask our volunteers to bring gloves\, sturdy shoes (some work can be muddy or around wet areas that waterproof boots may be beneficial)\, sunscreen and clothes that will protect them from thorns and the elements. \nWe will provide a pizza lunch and beverages as needed but we recommend folks bring plenty of water and a snack. \nIf volunteers want to bring any clippers\, shovels or even pickup trucks that can transport items to the landfill they might be able to be used but we ask that no one does any chainsawing unless they contact us prior to the event due to safety concerns. We may have the chainsaw work covered. \nParking will be available in front of the center in the grass and down in our lower field off E. Nobles Mill Road if needed\, assuming the creek is not flowing heavily and contained beneath the road. Please call Scott with any questions or if you need direction the day of the event 443-340-7980. \n  \n

SUMMARY:End of Summer Sunset Paddle On The Bush River
DESCRIPTION:For our last water tour of the summer we will take attendees for a beautiful paddle on the Bush River through part of the Bush River Natural Resource Management Area in Harford County\, Maryland. This is a bring-your-own-boat event where we will lead the group up and back this beautiful tidal freshwater river through marsh and forest canopy while providing on the fly wildlife education. Earlier this year we were fortunate to see bird species such as terns\, herons\, bald eagles\, barn swallows\, red-tailed hawks\, and pileated woodpeckers. We shared the waters with river otters\, beaver\, muskrat and some eastern painted turtles. Our goal is to treat everyone to a spectacular sunset over the marsh at the end of the trip where we can sit in silence to take in the sounds of nature and block out the modern world for a short moment. \nWe expect everyone to wear life jackets (PFDs)\, bring water\, a snack\, insect spray\, sunscreen\, and clothing / footwear that can get wet. There will be great photo opportunities but we recommending having waterproof cases or at least dry bags to safely store equipment. \nThe tides appear suitable but we will keep an eye on the weather as we get closer. If there is thunder\, lightning\, high winds or rain we will reschedule the event. \n*All vehicles will park in the shoulder of Route 40 on the south side\, just east of the river the bridge river crossing and be left there during the paddle. Please secure valuables and park as far from the busy highway as possible. Safety first! The launch is primitive and done via a bank into the river. \n* We have limited space on the upper stretches of the creek so please confirm whether you are coming or not prior to the event so we can notify other guests that the event is full. \n* Suggested donation for event is $10 each\, please see the ticket link to reserve your spot \n** This event made possible by a grant from the Harford County Office of Economic Development

SUMMARY:Stargazing in the Wild
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first public event at our newly constructed hilltop Stargazing & Wildlife Viewing platform! Escape the light pollution of town to enjoy the darker skies over Darlington from our great vantage point with a 180 degree view of the horizon. Our friends with the Harford Astronomical Society will have a handful of telescopes and expert astronomers to guide you through a tour of the visible night sky while we discuss and hopefully discover some nocturnal wildlife.\n\n\n\n\n\nSince we had to reschedule from our May the 4th (Star Wars Day) date and we will be looking towards galaxies far\, far away\, feel free to dress as your favorite character\, show off your favorite Star Wars gear\, and look out for a few Star Wars themed surprises.\n\n\n\n\n\n** This event is weather dependent since we need clear skies. If we cancel it will be rescheduled for the following month to ensure the proper moon phase and position to allow for adequate viewing of astronomical elements.\n\n\n** Event is limited due to size of platform and availability of telescopes.\n\n\n** Tickets prices are $10 for each adult and $5 per child\, first come first served.\n\n\n** We will meet at our the parking area in front of our barn classroom at 8:30pm and hike up to the hillside platform together. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we partner with Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake to host one of their spring & summer spiritual walks to learn about what’s happening to our local watershed and the web of life that depends on it. Together\, we’ll discuss actions you and your congregation can take to protect your local ecosystem while touring our various wetlands\, stream restoration project and wildlife enhancements at the under construction Susquehannock Wildlife Center. We may even have some of our live animal ambassadors present. \nFrom Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake – “Now is the time for people of faith to heed the call to restore creation. The Earth is a gift to be cherished. Its rich resources are on loan to each of us\, individually and collectively. Yet we have been poor caretakers and our negative impact is evident all around us in trashed and degraded streams and waterways in your own neighborhood. But by working along with others this can change. \nInterfaith Partners for the Chesapeake will work with your congregation to cultivate a strong faith-rooted commitment to pollution reduction.” \n* Suitable for all ages and fitness levels.\n* No pets allowed so that we may increase our chances of observing wildlife.\n* The Susquehannock Wildlife Center is not yet open to the public but will be open for this special event while under construction. \nAll guests must register prior to attending here – http://www.interfaithchesapeake.org/harford

SUMMARY:Sunset Paddle On The Bush River
DESCRIPTION:For our first water tour of the summer\, we will take attendees for a beautiful paddle on the Bush River through part of the Bush River Natural Resource Management Area in Harford County\, Maryland. This is a bring-your-own-boat event where we will lead the group up and back this beautiful tidal freshwater river through marsh and forest canopy while providing on the fly wildlife education. Last year we were fortunate to see bird species such as terns\, herons\, bald eagles\, barn swallows\, red-tailed hawks\, and pileated woodpeckers. We shared the waters with beaver\, muskrat and some eastern painted turtles. Our goal is to treat everyone to a spectacular sunset over the marsh at the end of the trip where we can sit in silence to take in the sounds of nature and block out the modern world for a short moment. \n\n\n \n\n\nWe expect everyone to wear life jackets (PFDs)\, bring water\, a snack\, insect spray\, sunscreen\, and clothing / footwear that can get wet. There will be great photo opportunities but we recommending having waterproof cases or at least dry bags to safely store equipment. \n\n\n \n\n\nThe tides appear suitable but we will keep an eye on the weather as we get closer. If there is thunder\, lightning\, high winds or rain we will reschedule the event.\n\n\n \n\n\n*All vehicles will park in the shoulder of Route 40 on the south side\, just east of the river the river crossing and be left there during the paddle. Please secure valuables and park as far from the busy highway as possible. Safety first! The launch is primitive and done via a bank into the river.\n\n\n \n\n\n* We have limited space on the upper stretches of the creek so please confirm whether you are coming or not prior to the event so we can notify other guests that the event is full.\n\n\n \n\n\n* Suggested donation for event is $10 each\n\n\n \n\n\n** This event made possible by a grant from the Harford County Office of Economic Development

SUMMARY:Night Hike to an Amphibian Vernal Pool
DESCRIPTION:Help us survey a special seasonal wetland area for emerging amphibians such as wood frogs\, spring peepers\, and spotted salamanders. During this time of the year the park canals fill with rainwater and become temporary\, seasonal wetlands called vernal pools. It is in these types of pools that amphibians will migrate to and breed so that they may lay their eggs. This event offers participants an up close look at an ancient ritual that few ever get to see. \n** This date is our best guess but it is subject to change based on weather conditions and availability of wildlife which we will try to confirm ahead of time. Please check back prior to the event to make sure it hasn’t changed. \nDue to the popularity of this event last year\, limited parking\, the sensitivity of the habitat and species\, and the narrowness of the trail surrounding the pools\, we will likely break the event up into two smaller groups and possibly times with a later announcement based on how many sign up using our ticket link. \n* Bring waterproof boots\, a flashlight\, and a camera!\n*To protect the habitat and wildlife we will ask that participants remain on edge of wetlands and that we disinfect all boots that have been in other wetlands prior to entry.\n* Permission for after dusk access has been obtained from Susquehanna State Park. \nLOCATION: We will meet at the parking area on Stafford Road at the confluence of Deer Creek and the Susquehanna. This is about 1/2 mile northwest of the intersection of Rock Run Road & Stafford Road at the Rock Run Mill area. \nThe address that will get you closest is this 806 Stafford Rd\, Havre de Grace\, MD 21078 but you will need to go up a little further on Stafford Road. \nGPS Coordinates: 39°36’46.4″N 76°08’56.7″W \nQuestions or get lost? Call Scott 443-340-7980 \n* Event is free but a ticket is required since space is limited\n* Donations appreciated!\n*This event made possible by a grant from the Harford County Office of Economic Development

Many of these pools have been dry but the recent snow melt and slowly warming temperatures should restart some breeding activity this weekend. \n\n\n \n\n\n* Bring waterproof boots\, a flashlight\, and a camera! \n\n\n*To protect the habitat and wildlife we will ask that participants remain on edge of wetlands and that we disinfect all boots that have been in other wetlands prior to entry. \n\n\n* Permission for after dusk access has been obtained from Susquehanna State Park.\n\n\n \n\n\nLOCATION: We will meet at the parking area on Stafford Road at the confluence of Deer Creek and the Susquehanna. This is about 1/2 mile northwest of the intersection of Rock Run Road & Stafford Road at the Rock Run Mill area. \n\n\n \n\n\nThe address that will get you closest is this 806 Stafford Rd\, Havre de Grace\, MD 21078 but you will need to go up a little further on Stafford Road.\n\n\n \n\n\nGPS Coordinates: 39°36’46.4″N 76°08’56.7″W\n\n\n \n\n\nQuestions or get lost? SUMMARY:Opt Outside - Black Friday Sunset Hike and Campfire
DESCRIPTION:Join us in following REI’s movement to #Optoutside this Black Friday to show that on a day where so many are crowding into stores to shop\, we can enjoy the tranquility of nature together! We will gather at the site of our wildlife center (not yet open to the public) just before sunset to hike a loop around the property\, see the future location for our stargazing / wildlife viewing platform and then settle in around the campfire to warm up\, enjoy some hot cocoa and smores while listening for owl calls and awaiting the beautiful array of stars to join us above. We will discuss the future plans for the wildlife center\, give a lesson on native wildlife\, and kickoff our next fundraising campaign. \n** Donations to help us with our work and ensure the stargazing platform becomes a reality is welcomed and encouraged! We are a 501c3 non-profit organization that exists because of the generosity of our community!
