SUMMARY:End of Summer Sunset Paddle On The Bush River
DESCRIPTION:To enjoy the transition from summer to fall\, we will take attendees for a beautiful paddle on the Bush River through part of the Bush River Natural Resource Management Area in Harford County\, Maryland. This is a bring-your-own-boat event where we will lead the group up and back this beautiful tidal freshwater river through marsh and forest canopy while providing on the fly wildlife education. In previous years we were fortunate to see bird species such as terns\, herons\, bald eagles\, barn swallows\, red-tailed hawks\, and pileated woodpeckers. We shared the waters with river otters\, beaver\, muskrat and some eastern painted turtles. Our goal is to treat everyone to a spectacular sunset over the marsh at the end of the trip where we can sit in silence to take in the sounds of nature and escape the modern world for a short moment.\n*For safety and to prevent the spread of COVID-19\, all paddlers will be required to wear face coverings until able to be adequately spaced on the water. Please bring face coverings on your boat in case assistance is needed and close proximity is required. Hand sanitizer will be provided and used between handling each guest’s boats if needed.\n*We expect everyone to wear life jackets (PFDs)\, bring water\, a snack\, insect spray\, sunscreen\, and clothing / footwear that can get wet. There will be great photo opportunities but we recommending having waterproof cases or at least dry bags to safely store equipment.\n*The tides appear suitable but we will keep an eye on the weather as we get closer. If there is thunder\, lightning\, high winds or rain we will reschedule the event.\n*All vehicles will park in the shoulder of Route 40 on the south side at 39°27’43.2″N 76°15’06.2″W (closest address is 4303 Pulaski Highway Abingdon\, MD)\, just east of the Bush River bridge and be left there during the paddle. Please secure valuables and park as far from the busy highway as possible. Safety first! The launch is primitive and done via a bank into the river. Assistance will be provided as needed.\n* We have limited space on the upper stretches of the creek so please confirm whether you are coming or not prior to the event so we can notify other guests that the event is full.\n* Suggested donation for event is $10 each\, please see the ticket link to reserve your spot. We have limited space\, especially on the upper stretches of the creek so please purchase your ticket in advance.\n*Any questions before or on the day of the event please contact us at 443-333-9453.\n** This event made possible by a grant from the Harford County Office of Community & Economic Development

SUMMARY:*VIRTUAL* Night Hike to an Amphibian Vernal Pool
DESCRIPTION:*Due to the current efforts to avoid large gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic\, we will be trying something new and offering this event virtually. Please stay tuned for the live feed link on Facebook the night of the event* \nHelp us virtually survey a special seasonal wetland area for emerging amphibians such as wood frogs\, spring peepers\, and spotted salamanders. During this time of the year the park canals fill with rainwater and become temporary\, seasonal wetlands called vernal pools. It is in these types of pools that amphibians will migrate to and breed so that they may lay their eggs. This event offers participants an up close look at an ancient ritual that few ever get to see. \n**Donations appreciated to help support our work!** \n** This date is our best guess but it is subject to change based on weather conditions and availability of wildlife. We will post updates the night of the event.** \n*To protect the habitat and wildlife our participants will disinfect all boots prior to entry. \n* Permission for after dusk access has been obtained from Susquehanna State Park. \n*This event made possible by a grant from the Harford County Office of Economic Development

SUMMARY:Grow Your Own Meadow - Talk & Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk and walk as we discuss the importance of an often overlooked habitat\, native meadows and grasslands. These beautiful and somewhat rare local landscapes not only provide habitat and food for a variety of wildlife species\, but aid in reducing stormwater runoff\, protecting our watershed.  We will start off the talk in our barn classroom where we will premiere a new educational video we have created about creating meadows and lead a discussion on how you can create your own meadow\, from a mini-meadow in your garden to converting an unused field or corridor into meadow.  We will help connect attendees to potential programs and resources to obtain seed and even grants.  We will then hike around the Wildlife Center property to look at mini-meadow strips and 6 acres of field converted to a native wildflower and grassland habitat. \n** This event and video made possible by a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust.

SUMMARY:Sunset Paddle On The Bush River
DESCRIPTION:For our first water tour of the year\, we will take attendees for a beautiful paddle on the Bush River through part of the Bush River Natural Resource Management Area in Harford County\, Maryland. This is a bring-your-own-boat event where we will lead the group up and back this beautiful tidal freshwater river through marsh and forest canopy while providing on the fly wildlife education. Last year we were fortunate to see bird species such as terns\, herons\, bald eagles\, barn swallows\, red-tailed hawks\, and pileated woodpeckers. We shared the waters with beaver\, muskrat and some eastern painted turtles. Our goal is to treat everyone to a spectacular sunset over the marsh at the end of the trip where we can sit in silence to take in the sounds of nature and block out the modern world for a short moment. \nWe expect everyone to wear life jackets (PFDs)\, bring water\, a snack\, insect spray\, sunscreen\, and clothing / footwear that can get wet. There will be great photo opportunities but we recommending having waterproof cases or at least dry bags to safely store equipment. \nThe tides appear suitable but we will keep an eye on the weather as we get closer. If there is thunder\, lightning\, high winds or rain we will reschedule the event. \n*All vehicles will park in the shoulder of Route 40 on the south side\, just east of the river the river crossing and be left there during the paddle. Please secure valuables and park as far from the busy highway as possible. Safety first! The launch is primitive and done via a bank into the river. \n* We have limited space on the upper stretches of the creek so please confirm whether you are coming or not prior to the event so we can notify other guests that the event is full. \n* Suggested donation for event is $10 each\, please see the ticket link to reserve your spot \n** This event made possible by a grant from the Harford County Office of Economic Development

SUMMARY:*Canceled* Wolf Moon Eclipse Viewing & Wild Canine Talk
DESCRIPTION:**Canceled due to high winds and low temperatures** Join us for this late night special skywatching event where we will use the rising of the Wolf Moon eclipse to discuss some of our most interesting native carnivores\, the canine family\, both past and present.\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you know a wolf species\, that most believe to be the now critically endangered red wolf\, once roamed our local landscape? Did you know that we have two fox species\, including one that can climb trees? Did you know that the Eastern coyote\, one of our Wildlife Center residents\, is a hybrid species that has expanded into our area due to the removal of other top predators? Learn more about this fascinating family of mammals at our talk that will occur in the middle of the eclipse event.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe partial eclipse will start around 9:30pm and reach totality begins around 11:40pm. We plan to gather on our stargazing platform for the best view so please dress warmly. We will provide a heat source and hot drinks but we suggest dressing for winter weather. We will meet back in our barn classroom for the wild canine talk and return to the platform to watch the moon as it moves into the earth’s shadow.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information on the Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse from Space.com:\n\n\n\n\n\n“The Jan. 20-21\, 2019 total lunar eclipse will last 1 hour and 2 minutes\, according to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center lunar eclipse projections.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe full experience\, from the start of the partial eclipse to the end\, will last 3 hours and 17 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.space.com/42830-supermoon-blood-moon-total-lunar-eclipse-2019.html\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Time.com:\n\n\n\n\n\nThe term “blood moon” comes from the red hue that the moon appears to have during a lunar eclipse. As the moon passes into the earth’s shadow during a lunar eclipse\, the earth blocks almost all sunlight from hitting the moon. The only sunlight that gets through is first diffracted by the earth’s atmosphere\, resulting in the red coloring. (The moon emits no light of its own; what’s commonly called “moonlight” is in fact reflected sunlight.)\n\n\n\n\n\nThe term “super moon\,” meanwhile\, has to do with the apparent size of the moon. During the upcoming lunar eclipse\, the moon will be at its closest point to Earth in its orbit\, making it appear slightly larger — or “super.” The moon itself won’t actually get any larger\, it will just appear larger than normal — and only just a bit.\n\n\n\n\n\nAnd according to the Farmer’s Almanac\, the term “wolf moon” comes from names that some Native American groups gave to each full moon throughout the year. January’s full moon was dubbed the “wolf moon” because “amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter\, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages\,” the Farmer’s Almanac says. “

SUMMARY:Flood Clean-Up Day at the Wildlife Center
DESCRIPTION:Many of you have kindly offered assistance and we have taken time to assess the damages and create a plan for the work ahead\, starting with this volunteer day where we can use your help! We are dubbing this event our “Rock & Roll Clean-Up Day” because we will be quite literally rolling rocks that have been moved from our creek to where we don’t want them along with removing broken fence posts\, debris\, and trash that has been deposited by the terrible flooding we recently experienced. We plan to have a dumpster onsite for the cleanup. \nWe ask our volunteers to bring gloves\, sturdy shoes (some work can be muddy or around wet areas that waterproof boots may be beneficial)\, sunscreen and clothes that will protect them from thorns and the elements. \nWe will provide a pizza lunch and beverages as needed but we recommend folks bring plenty of water and a snack. \nIf volunteers want to bring any clippers\, shovels or even pickup trucks that can transport items to the landfill they might be able to be used but we ask that no one does any chainsawing unless they contact us prior to the event due to safety concerns. We may have the chainsaw work covered. \nParking will be available in front of the center in the grass and down in our lower field off E. Nobles Mill Road if needed\, assuming the creek is not flowing heavily and contained beneath the road. Please call Scott with any questions or if you need direction the day of the event 443-340-7980. \n  \n

SUMMARY:End of Summer Sunset Paddle On The Bush River
DESCRIPTION:For our last water tour of the summer we will take attendees for a beautiful paddle on the Bush River through part of the Bush River Natural Resource Management Area in Harford County\, Maryland. This is a bring-your-own-boat event where we will lead the group up and back this beautiful tidal freshwater river through marsh and forest canopy while providing on the fly wildlife education. Earlier this year we were fortunate to see bird species such as terns\, herons\, bald eagles\, barn swallows\, red-tailed hawks\, and pileated woodpeckers. We shared the waters with river otters\, beaver\, muskrat and some eastern painted turtles. \n*All vehicles will park in the shoulder of Route 40 on the south side\, just east of the river the bridge river crossing and be left there during the paddle.
