SUMMARY:Wildlife Conservation Center - Grand Opening Public Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Grand Opening of the Susquehannock Wildlife Conservation Center on April 12th and 13th\, 2025\, at 1725 Trappe Church Road\, Darlington\, Maryland. After a decade of consistent and steadfast commitment to renovating a farmhouse into a state-of-the-art interpretive center\, we are excited to open our doors to the public on this very special occasion! The Susquehannock Wildlife Conservation Center features detailed live animal aquariums in realistic settings\, engaging exhibits that highlight some of the wildlife and habitat specialities of the Lower Susquehanna Region\, intricately designed interpretive signage\, as well as indoor and outdoor classrooms. Our property features an outdoor amphitheater\, a fire ring with picnic tables and benches\, a kid’s play area\, a wildlife viewing and stargazing platform\, and trails that cut through meadows\, along a stream\, and through a forested hillside. \nOur Grand Opening offers a first look at the Susquehannock Wildlife Conservation Center and will consist of an indoor and outdoor tour and a hike around the property. The tour will begin with a brief introductory talk in the outdoor classroom\, then we will showcase the exhibits\, aquariums\, and interpretive signage indoors\, then the tour will end with a hike around the property. Tours will take approximately 2 hours to complete and our tour time slots will be held from 10:00 am–12:00 pm\, 1:00 pm–3:00 pm\, and 4:00 pm–6:00 pm on April 13th\, 2025 for the general public with tours for members on April 12th. Please reserve a ticket for your preferred time slot so we can gauge how many people will be in attendance for each tour. We have limited onsite parking\, so you must reserve a ticket beforehand. If you arrive at a tour late\, you can choose to join the tour late or let us know so we can try to accommodate you on the next tour time slot. \nWe envision that the Susquehannock Wildlife Conservation Center will be a local headquarters for wildlife education\, rescue\, and conservation research. Our interpretive signage\, live animal aquariums\, wildlife and habitat exhibits\, and classrooms will provide an opportunity for visitors of all ages to learn about the organisms and landscapes that make the Lower Susquehanna Region unique. The Wildlife Conservation Center will serve as a training center and home base for our wildlife rescue efforts. Our facility will also be our central location for planning research and conservation actions from our office space. Additionally\, the Susquehannock Wildlife Conservation Center will be a location for research and conservation projects such as our ongoing efforts for the State Insect\, the Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly\, headstarting efforts for declining species\, and projects that have yet to be launched. Our longterm plan is to allow access on a limited basis so our property can remain a place where wildlife is flourishing and where our visitors can come to have unique wildlife and natural history experiences. After the Grand Opening weekend\, we will be open for events and special occasions until we can expand our staff\, which will allow us to have a consistent schedule for public visitation. \nPreparing the Susquehannock Wildlife Conservation Center for its Grand Opening has been a tremendous undertaking and would not be possible without the support of like-minded organizations\, local businesses and individuals who made our vision possible by contributing time\, materials\, funds\, and additional means of support. The Grand Opening marks the beginning of a new era and a period of immense growth for Susquehannock Wildlife Society\, including our new membership! We will be continuing to rely on the generous donations and sponsorships from our members\, local individuals\, organizations\, businesses and grant funded opportunities.

SUMMARY:Night Hike to an Amphibian Vernal Pool
DESCRIPTION:Help us survey a special seasonal wetland area for emerging amphibians such as wood frogs\, spring peepers\, and spotted salamanders. During this time of the year the park canals fill with rainwater and become temporary\, seasonal wetlands called vernal pools. It is in these types of pools that amphibians will migrate to and breed so that they may lay their eggs. This event offers participants an up close look at an ancient ritual that few ever get to see. \n** This date is our best guess but it is subject to change based on weather conditions and availability of wildlife. Please check back prior to the event to make sure it hasn’t changed. \nTICKETS ARE FREE BUT REQUIRED! \nMembers will receive the ticket link via email first and then we will make the link public for any remaining tickets. Want to become a member to have the first chance at tickets for our events? Sign up here www.suskywildlife.org/membership \nDue to the popularity of this event each year\, limited parking\, the sensitivity of the habitat and species\, and the narrowness of the trail surrounding the pools\, we will break the event up into two smaller groups about an hour apart. The first session will be a little shorter and more geared towards children. The second slot we can potentially go a little more in-depth and explore further down the trail. Please reserve your ticket accordingly. We ask that guests for the second time slot be patient as we wrap up the first group and that guests from the first group clear out in a timely fashion to make room for our next set of guests. Carpooling is encouraged! If you get a ticket and are unable to come please let us know so we can offer those tickets back to other guests who we could not accommodate after selling out. \n* Bring waterproof boots\, a flashlight\, and a camera! \n*To protect the habitat and wildlife we will ask that participants remain on edge of wetlands. We will disinfect all of our boots and equipment with a 3% bleach solution (1/2 cup bleach : 1 gallon water) that have been in other wetlands prior to entry. \n* Permission for after dusk access has been obtained from Susquehanna State Park. \nLOCATION: We will meet at the parking area on Stafford Road at the confluence of Deer Creek and the Susquehanna. This is about 1/2 mile northwest of the intersection of Rock Run Road & Stafford Road at the Rock Run Mill area. \nThe address that will get you closest is this 801 Stafford Rd\, Havre de Grace\, MD 21078 but you will need to go up a little further on Stafford Road. \nGPS Coordinates: 39°36’46.4″N 76°08’56.7″W \nQuestions or get lost? Call Scott 443-333-9453 \n* Donations appreciated! \n*This event made possible by a grant from the Harford County Office of Community & Economic Development

SUMMARY:End of Summer Sunset Paddle On The Bush River
DESCRIPTION:To enjoy the transition from summer to fall\, we will take attendees for a beautiful paddle on the Bush River through part of the Bush River Natural Resource Management Area in Harford County\, Maryland. In previous years we were fortunate to see bird species such as terns\, herons\, bald eagles\, barn swallows\, red-tailed hawks\, and pileated woodpeckers. We shared the waters with river otters\, beaver\, muskrat and some eastern painted turtles. Our goal is to treat everyone to a spectacular sunset over the marsh at the end of the trip where we can sit in silence to take in the sounds of nature and escape the modern world for a short moment.\n*For safety and to prevent the spread of COVID-19\, all paddlers will be required to wear face coverings until able to be adequately spaced on the water. Please bring face coverings on your boat in case assistance is needed and close proximity is required. Hand sanitizer will be provided and used between handling each guest’s boats if needed.\n*We expect everyone to wear life jackets (PFDs)\, bring water\, a snack\, insect spray\, sunscreen\, and clothing / footwear that can get wet. There will be great photo opportunities but we recommending having waterproof cases or at least dry bags to safely store equipment.\n*The tides appear suitable but we will keep an eye on the weather as we get closer. If there is thunder\, lightning\, high winds or rain we will reschedule the event.\n*All vehicles will park in the shoulder of Route 40 on the south side at 39°27’43.2″N 76°15’06.2″W (closest address is 4303 Pulaski Highway Abingdon\, MD)\, just east of the Bush River bridge and be left there during the paddle. Please secure valuables and park as far from the busy highway as possible. Safety first! The launch is primitive and done via a bank into the river. Assistance will be provided as needed.\n* We have limited space on the upper stretches of the creek so please confirm whether you are coming or not prior to the event so we can notify other guests that the event is full.\n* Suggested donation for event is $10 each\, please see the ticket link to reserve your spot. SUMMARY:*VIRTUAL* Night Hike to an Amphibian Vernal Pool
DESCRIPTION:*Due to the current efforts to avoid large gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic\, we will be trying something new and offering this event virtually. Please stay tuned for the live feed link on Facebook the night of the event* \nHelp us virtually survey a special seasonal wetland area for emerging amphibians such as wood frogs\, spring peepers\, and spotted salamanders. During this time of the year the park canals fill with rainwater and become temporary\, seasonal wetlands called vernal pools. It is in these types of pools that amphibians will migrate to and breed so that they may lay their eggs. This event offers participants an up close look at an ancient ritual that few ever get to see. \n**Donations appreciated to help support our work!** \n** This date is our best guess but it is subject to change based on weather conditions and availability of wildlife. We will post updates the night of the event.** \n*To protect the habitat and wildlife our participants will disinfect all boots prior to entry. \n* Permission for after dusk access has been obtained from Susquehanna State Park. \n*This event made possible by a grant from the Harford County Office of Economic Development

SUMMARY:Grow Your Own Meadow - Talk & Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk and walk as we discuss the importance of an often overlooked habitat\, native meadows and grasslands. These beautiful and somewhat rare local landscapes not only provide habitat and food for a variety of wildlife species\, but aid in reducing stormwater runoff\, protecting our watershed.  We will start off the talk in our barn classroom where we will premiere a new educational video we have created about creating meadows and lead a discussion on how you can create your own meadow\, from a mini-meadow in your garden to converting an unused field or corridor into meadow.  We will help connect attendees to potential programs and resources to obtain seed and even grants.  We will then hike around the Wildlife Center property to look at mini-meadow strips and 6 acres of field converted to a native wildflower and grassland habitat. \n** This event and video made possible by a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust.

SUMMARY:Sunset Paddle On The Bush River
DESCRIPTION:For our first water tour of the year\, we will take attendees for a beautiful paddle on the Bush River through part of the Bush River Natural Resource Management Area in Harford County\, Maryland. This is a bring-your-own-boat event where we will lead the group up and back this beautiful tidal freshwater river through marsh and forest canopy while providing on the fly wildlife education. Last year we were fortunate to see bird species such as terns\, herons\, bald eagles\, barn swallows\, red-tailed hawks\, and pileated woodpeckers. We shared the waters with beaver\, muskrat and some eastern painted turtles. Our goal is to treat everyone to a spectacular sunset over the marsh at the end of the trip where we can sit in silence to take in the sounds of nature and block out the modern world for a short moment. \nWe expect everyone to wear life jackets (PFDs)\, bring water\, a snack\, insect spray\, sunscreen\, and clothing / footwear that can get wet. There will be great photo opportunities but we recommending having waterproof cases or at least dry bags to safely store equipment. \nThe tides appear suitable but we will keep an eye on the weather as we get closer. If there is thunder\, lightning\, high winds or rain we will reschedule the event. \n*All vehicles will park in the shoulder of Route 40 on the south side\, just east of the river the river crossing and be left there during the paddle. Please secure valuables and park as far from the busy highway as possible. Safety first! The launch is primitive and done via a bank into the river. \n* We have limited space on the upper stretches of the creek so please confirm whether you are coming or not prior to the event so we can notify other guests that the event is full. \n* Suggested donation for event is $10 each\, please see the ticket link to reserve your spot \n** This event made possible by a grant from the Harford County Office of Economic Development

SUMMARY:*Canceled* Wolf Moon Eclipse Viewing & Wild Canine Talk
DESCRIPTION:**Canceled due to high winds and low temperatures** Join us for this late night special skywatching event where we will use the rising of the Wolf Moon eclipse to discuss some of our most interesting native carnivores\, the canine family\, both past and present.\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you know a wolf species\, that most believe to be the now critically endangered red wolf\, once roamed our local landscape? Did you know that we have two fox species\, including one that can climb trees? Did you know that the Eastern coyote\, one of our Wildlife Center residents\, is a hybrid species that has expanded into our area due to the removal of other top predators? Learn more about this fascinating family of mammals at our talk that will occur in the middle of the eclipse event.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe partial eclipse will start around 9:30pm and reach totality begins around 11:40pm. We plan to gather on our stargazing platform for the best view so please dress warmly. We will provide a heat source and hot drinks but we suggest dressing for winter weather. We will meet back in our barn classroom for the wild canine talk and return to the platform to watch the moon as it moves into the earth’s shadow.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information on the Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse from Space.com:\n\n\n\n\n\n“The Jan. 20-21\, 2019 total lunar eclipse will last 1 hour and 2 minutes\, according to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center lunar eclipse projections.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe full experience\, from the start of the partial eclipse to the end\, will last 3 hours and 17 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.space.com/42830-supermoon-blood-moon-total-lunar-eclipse-2019.html\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Time.com:\n\n\n\n\n\nThe term “blood moon” comes from the red hue that the moon appears to have during a lunar eclipse. As the moon passes into the earth’s shadow during a lunar eclipse\, the earth blocks almost all sunlight from hitting the moon. The only sunlight that gets through is first diffracted by the earth’s atmosphere\, resulting in the red coloring. (The moon emits no light of its own; what’s commonly called “moonlight” is in fact reflected sunlight.)\n\n\n\n\n\nThe term “super moon\,” meanwhile\, has to do with the apparent size of the moon. During the upcoming lunar eclipse\, the moon will be at its closest point to Earth in its orbit\, making it appear slightly larger — or “super.” The moon itself won’t actually get any larger\, it will just appear larger than normal — and only just a bit.\n\n\n\n\n\nAnd according to the Farmer’s Almanac\, the term “wolf moon” comes from names that some Native American groups gave to each full moon throughout the year. January’s full moon was dubbed the “wolf moon” because “amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter\, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages\,” the Farmer’s Almanac says. “
